Art Basel: Rocky Grimes
By Zio
Rocky Grimes, artist and founder of FACTION, brings you an interactive installation called RAW. Grimes takes a break from galleries, storefronts and clubs during Art Basel this year to bring his art directly to the people. RAW is part visual, part interactive, part ideological. This adventure will challenge the conventional vision of screen printing and exhibit the importance of independence within the arts. Grimes will take to the streets of Miami Beach Friday and the Wynwood Arts District Saturday. Armed with a pushcart, a few silkscreens and some T-shirts, Rocky will take his live screen printing into the willing and unwilling crowds of Miami’s Art Basel to demonstrate the essence of existence without the hand of sponsors. As the lines of consumerism, artistic expression and corporate sponsorship blend and blur, it is important to remember that before the gallery lights turn on and the logo-loaded flyers are printed and distributed, someone conceived an idea and committed that idea to a medium so that it conveyed a message or took on its own meaning so as to affect or disaffect the viewer. Grimes erases the barriers between artist and viewer and actually involves them in the process by producing screen prints in an interactive environment. Rocky Grimes hopes to see you in the streets of Miami this year. He will have shirts on hand or you can provide your own to be printed in an unstructured environment. Unfortunately, there is no set location for this traveling installation.
