Mr. Brainwash
By Zio
Mr. Brainwash, or MBW, is the moniker of an eccentric French filmmaker. MBW has spent the last nine years attempting to make the ultimate documentary about graffiti art. But whilst filming many of the world’s most renowned street artists at work, MBW began putting his camera aside and making art of his own. He has graduated from a few hand-drawn stickers to giant billboard sized paste-ups.
MBW does not fit the stereotype of your average street vandal. His artistic process chiefly consists of throwing random modern cultural icons into a blender and turning it up to eleven. The results are by turns profound, provocative and inspirational.
“Life is beautiful” is the first exhibition ever mounted by Mr. Brainwash. It takes place in a former Hollywood studio complex and will feature over 200 paintings, sculptures and prints alongside an installation made from 25,000 books and a life-size re-creation of Edward Hopper’s “Nighthawks.” For more info go to www.artshow2008.com

I was impacted by all of Mr. Brainwash’s work. I hope to see more of his art documenting current international wars. I sensed that he may be an artist who can take an antiwar stance.

So many art critics here. Whatever happened to “Art is in the eye of the beholder”? Mr. Brainwash’s technique or message may not be anything new but that was one dope show.

“I was told by someone very very very close to Banksy that Mr. Brainwash is a “Banksy prank” aimed to prove he can start from nothing and build a brand from the ground up again. Which is why when you look at the show there is thousands of dollars worth of custom made props all paid for by Banksy. I was told that Banksy will announce he is behind Mr. Brainwash in April-May 2009. What I find funny though is how all of the garbage that is being sold through the name Mr. Brainwash will probably be worth as much as the Bansky stuff when it all goes public. Proving once again people are whores for brand names.”

Haha, yeah, of course this is art. “Art is in the eye of the beholder” as Deez Nutz says. But it’s only art if everyone beholding it is willing to swallow this washed-down version of it. This is called a scene, and there will always be people trying hard to make it. Just ask the question . . . what is the point of all of this? Is he really saying something, or just juxtaposing recycled cliches and ironies under the guise of ‘pop-art’. I would like to say, the joke is on you, but unfortunately, I think it’s on him to . . .

No one said shit about MBW when his work was up at Banksy’s Can Festival. Now that he’s blown up people are just hating.
